Job Searching in East Kilbride
In the few months I've heard the term “generation
jobless” being thrown around. As somebody in their mid-20s I can only assume
this term is applicable to me. After a brief stint at a recruitment agency - of
course it's the job that had actually nothing to do with my relevant degree - I
was made redundant after 14 months in the role. From here, with my limited set
of skills, I struggled to find work. Frustrated and angry after applying for
100s upon hundreds of jobs I began to ask why. Why, after four years of hard
work at University, could I not get a job? Jobs in East Kilbride were so hard to come by...
After doing some brief research, I came to the
conclusion that I was one of thousands of young people in the UK in a similar
situation, with no money in my pocket, and no job to call my own, this was a
small comfort. It seems that young people in this market have been hit the
hardest, especially young men. Just by a glance at the queues at the job centre
it is easy to see that the majority of people are men under 30 years old. It
was then I began to think of other unfortunate people.
After four years of university and education plus some decent job experience I could still not find work. If I was struggling there must have been so many more off than me. I began to read information on the situation reading blogs, news stories and industry papers. I now consider myself well-read on the situation. So I decided to start a blog of my own about it.
I can happily say I did eventually find work but I would like to think, with sheer the months of struggling and applications that I went through to get where I am today, hopefully people will read this I will give them some hope for the future of their own job searches.
